Mohawk College team collects coveted hardware at Skills Ontario 2024

Competitors earn five gold, three silver and three bronze medals

Mohawk College skilled trades students excelled in the Skills Ontario 2024 post-secondary skilled trades competition earlier this week, collecting 11 medals and earning the prestigious Gene Haas Foundation Manufacturing Award.

The Skills Ontario Competition offers a unique opportunity for top students from colleges across the province to demonstrate their mastery of their skills in their field. Over the two and a half days, they turn the heads of their educators, family, friends and prospective employers. Winners in several categories also have the opportunity to compete in the national Skills Canada competition, which will be hosted in Quebec City, May 27- June 1.

This year, the Mohawk College team included 37 competitors in 21 different competitions, finishing on the podium in more than half of those categories.

Gold   

  • Jarvis Noon - Aircraft Maintenance (coach: Adam Sabourin)
  • Liam Alford - Auto - Collision Repair (coach: Robert Paladichuk)
  • Colton Lawrence - Auto - Painting (coach: Monika Gonthier)
  • Louis Budai - Industrial Mechanic Millwright (coach: David Clarke)
  • Charles Batista - Sheetmetal (coaches: Brian Lyle, Robert (Cam) Wakeling)

Silver  

  • Matthew Gawley - Graphic Design - Studio Production (coach: Mitch Thompson)
  • Jack Birdsell & David (Rodney) Binns - Horticulture (Team of 2) (coach: Michele Berlingieri)
  • Nickolas Saffar - Refrigeration (coaches: Mike Boss, Jonas Kybartas)

Bronze

  • Andrew Doyle - Refrigeration (coaches: Mike Boss, Jonas Kybartas)
  • Mateo Smith - Carpentry - Industrial (coach: Andy Ross)
  • Thomas McBrine - Heating Systems Technician (coach: Greg Stewart)

Gene Haas Foundation Manufacturing Award

During the final ceremonies for Skills Ontario 2024, Mohawk College also received the Gene Haas Foundation Manufacturing Award.

This award, including $5000 designated for student scholarships in the manufacturing programs, recognizes the post-secondary institution that shows the greatest dedication to promoting the manufacturing sector. Mohawk College emerged as the top-ranking institution in overall competition scores in manufacturing, demonstrating the college's commitment to providing exceptional education and support to our students. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our faculty and students alike.
