VANIER COLLEGE
Vanier Liberal Arts Teacher Eric Lamoureux honoured with the 2023-2024 Teaching Excellence Award

June 12, 2024

Energy, passion and enthusiasm for teaching are just a few of the words that describe Liberal Arts teacher Eric Lamoureux, the recipient of the 2023-2024 Vanier College Teaching Excellence Award. In making their unanimous recommendation, the selection committee stated that the theme emerging most often in his letters of support, related to his impact in the classroom directly with students: "This man was born to teach."

Eric is a history teacher who teaches courses in both the Social Science and Liberal Arts programs. He is also the current program coordinator for Liberal Arts. Eric's accomplishments and contributions embody perfectly the criteria of this award, notably excellence in teaching, the ability to foster and promote student success, and institutional engagement and commitment to the Vanier community. In fact, the committee stated, "Reading about the widespread positive impact that Eric has had, made us feel very proud that he is part of our Vanier community."

Classes with Eric are clearly lively events as he uses props like maps and posters, storytelling techniques, and expeditions outside the classroom to help students not only learn about history but to actually enjoy it. In the words of a student: "Eric had no problem stepping out of his comfort zone as a teacher, as he would even bring props and act out historical events sometimes with the help of his students. For example, I will never forget the reasons and effects of the pope's coronation of Charlemagne because that day he had brought a plastic tiara and had made a student crown him halfway through his lecture. He clearly showed his passion for teaching and his subject because he would always go the extra mile."

The line-up of students often seen outside his door for office hours is a testament to the help that Eric has provided to students over the years, not only to comprehend subject matter related to history, but also to improve their writing skills. In the words of one colleague, "to say that Eric is student-centered would be an understatement".

Just as important as Eric's commitment to teaching and to his students, is his engagement with the College community. He is an avid supporter and participant in recruiting activities, such as high school visits, Open House, Information Evening, and Student for a Day. Eric has greatly contributed to Vanier's social justice culture and has inspired the pursuit of projects and other related initiatives by staff and students. He has enhanced the experience for students in Liberal Arts by organizing museum trips, quiz shows with other programs, and tea parties at the Vanier Gardens. Notably, Eric is also a regular participant in the College's annual December 6th commemoration of the École Polytechnique massacre.

In summary, Eric's influence spans across faculties and departments, touching the lives of current and former students alike. To conclude with the words of one student: "It is clear that his goal for all his students is for them to do the best that they possibly can. I personally believe it a privilege to be taught by Eric, and the lessons taught in his class will be something I will remember forever."

Congratulations to Eric Lamoureux, recipient of the 2023-2024 Vanier College Teaching Excellence Award.
