MEDICINE HAT COLLEGE
Health Care Aide program now offered to Grasslands students

July 5, 2024

Opening doors for high school students interested in pursuing a career in health care, Grasslands School Division is partnering with Medicine Hat College (MHC) to offer a new dual credit opportunity.

Students in grades 11 and 12 can now earn credit toward the health care aide certificate, offered at MHC's Brooks campus.

Katie Graham, assistant superintendent at Grasslands School Division, says the program offers an opportunity for students to earn high school credits, begin their careers, and become connected with the wider community.

"We are incredibly excited to offer the health care aide program through our partnership with Medicine Hat College. This program will provide our students with the opportunity to explore and begin their careers in health care while still in high school, which is a powerful motivator. We anticipate that it will not only benefit our students, but also our local communities where they will be working upon graduation."

Prioritizing flexibility, the majority of the program may be taken online, with opportunities for hands-on learning and lab work as the course progresses.

Dean of MHC's School of Health and Community Services, Jason Openo, says the partnership is a way of addressing the need for health care professionals across Southern Alberta.

"All across Alberta, there is a great need for health care aides and we're excited that this partnership will allow high school students to accelerate their entry into a career in healthcare. This partnership with Grasslands ensures we are working together to fill an important workplace need in our region."
