CONFEDERATION COLLEGE
Explore Confederation College's TEC Hub: The Home of Innovation and Applied Research

August 13, 2024
Located within the McIntyre building on Confederation College's Thunder Bay campus, the Technology, Education, and Collaboration (TEC) Hub is a centre for advanced learning and innovation in northwestern Ontario. Officially opened in the fall of 2018, this 45,000-square-foot facility serves as a nexus for education, research, and community collaboration.

A Tour of the TEC Hub

Upon entering the TEC Hub, visitors are welcomed by the vibrant atmosphere of the Student Commons/Atrium, a bright and modern space for group study, socialization, and recreation. Student projects are proudly displayed in glass cases, showcasing the innovative work of our talented learners. A donor wall crafted from machined gears highlights the collaborative spirit of this manufacturing and engineering technology centre and pays tribute to the generous donors who helped bring the vision of this space to life. The atrium funnels into labs and practical classrooms where industry skills, sustainable manufacturing processes, and cutting-edge design are taught, equipping students with hands-on skills to excel in competitive job markets.

Advanced Manufacturing Technology

The Engineering Technology cluster programs housed in the Tec Hub, feature cutting-edge equipment, including modern 3D printers and CNC machines, providing students with hands-on experience that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Key programs include Industrial Manufacturing Processes, Mechanical Engineering Technician, Aerospace Manufacturing, and Carpentry and Renovation Techniques.

As an example, the Aerospace Manufacturing program focuses on advanced design and construction techniques, preparing students for careers with leading aerospace companies, as well as throughout many other manufacturing industries. The Mechanical Engineering Technician program offers a broad understanding of mechanical systems and design, while the Industrial Manufacturing Processes program delves into efficient production techniques. The Carpentry and Renovation Techniques program provides hands-on training in modern construction methods, readying graduates for both residential and commercial projects.

Innovation and Incubation

The TEC Hub is a collaborative space for students, faculty, and community partners to develop and test new ideas. Through student projects and applied research, the TEC Hub supports advanced manufacturing, technology, and resource sectors with vibrant research and technology transfer services.

For example, faculty and students collaborated with Wilderness North to support their FuelBoss system, an innovative fuel storage system for rural and remote environments. This synergy between education and industry drives both academic and economic growth in the region.

Confederation College supports industry in northwestern Ontario through applied research, building operations, and technical equipment. The TEC Hub is home to advanced additive manufacturing, prototyping, composites, and precision technologies. The nearby BioEnergy Learning and Research Centre (BLRC) also supports facility tours, knowledge sharing, and research opportunities related to biomass heating in northern Ontario. This infrastructure allows Confederation College to tackle real-world industry challenges, fostering practical solutions and innovative ideas while working towards sustainable energy solutions.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

We invite community partners to collaborate with Confederation College by utilizing the TEC Hub for research and development projects. The space is designed to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, encouraging regional groups and individuals to engage in diverse projects within the hub. This collaborative approach ensures that the benefits of the TEC Hub extend beyond the college, positively impacting the broader region.

The TEC Hub is a cornerstone of Confederation College's mission to provide high-quality education and support economic development in northwestern Ontario. By focusing on industry skills, advanced manufacturing technology, and innovation, the TEC Hub prepares students for successful careers while fostering a culture of research and collaboration. Whether you are a prospective student, a local business, or a community member, the TEC Hub offers a wealth of opportunities to learn, grow, and innovate.

To explore the TEC Hub further, take our 360 virtual tour or book an in-person tour any Tuesday throughout the summer months. Whether you're an industry partner or community member, the TEC Hub is your gateway to innovation and collaboration.
