KEYANO COLLEGE
Collaboration with FRAP Wood Buffalo to Launch Language Support Program for Newcomers in the Childcare Sector

August 9, 2024

Keyano College, in collaboration with FRAP Wood Buffalo, is excited to announce the launch of the "Language Support for Newcomers for Childcare, Level 1" (LSNC) program. This innovative initiative, funded by the Government of Alberta Settlement and Language Programs, aims to provide essential language support to newcomers, enhancing their integration into the childcare sector and overall community development. Registration will open in late Fall 2024, with the program commencing in January 2025.

"Our mission at FRAP in Fort McMurray is to support the integration and development of our Francophone community," said Alphonse Ahola, General Director of FRAP. "This program empowers newcomers with the language skills necessary to thrive in the childcare sector, benefiting the Wood Buffalo community. We are thrilled to partner with Keyano College on this important initiative."

Sandra Efu, Keyano College Interim President, VP, Academic & Student Experience, shared her thoughts on the collaboration: "At Keyano, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that supports the growth and development of all community members. By bridging language gaps, we are opening doors to meaningful employment opportunities in the childcare sector and contributing to the overall well-being of our community."

The LSNC program addresses language barriers that often hinder newcomers from accessing employment opportunities in the childcare sector. By equipping participants with the necessary language skills, the program aims to improve job prospects, promote economic self-sufficiency, and enhance the quality of childcare services in the region. Upon completing the program, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

The program is designed for newcomers and non-native English speakers interested in pursuing a career in childcare. FRAP Wood Buffalo is dedicated to promoting, initiating, and managing charitable activities to benefit the French-speaking community's intellectual, spiritual, and social development by settling newcomers in Alberta. They collaborate with local service providers and ethnocultural associations to support Francophone newcomers and refugee claimants.
