John Abbott College Retiree Appointed to the Order of Canada

Dr. Myrna Lashley, retired John Abbott College teacher, was recently appointed to the Order of Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada.

Myrna began her career at John Abbott teaching at the Centre of Continuing Education from 1991-2000. She became the Dean of Arts and General Education (2001-2003) before getting back to students in a Psychology classroom, sharing her expertise with them until her retirement in 2010.

Myrna is currently an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University and a researcher at the Culture and Mental Health Research Unit of the Lady Davis Institute. She is a well-known advocate against racial profiling, having served as Chair of the Government of Canada's Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security, and Vice-chair of the board of the École nationale de police du Québec. She was also appointed to the Comité expert en matière de profilage racial of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal.

Myrna has played a vital role in shaping policies, practices and interventions that promote equity, inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. Her commitment to racial justice has helped improve the experiences and outcomes for marginalized groups across Canada.
