Okanagan College is pleased to announce that Patrena Mackie has joined OC as the new Dean of Health and Social Development. With over 17 years of experience in teaching and health care, Patrena brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to our community. She holds a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Nursing.

Mackie comes to Okanagan College from Bow Valley College where she was the Associate Dean of the School of Health and Wellness, Nursing portfolio. During her career she has maintained a focus on integrating technology into curriculum and improving the learner experience. She is passionate about supporting marginalized learners and reducing barriers in post-secondary education to ensure equitable access for all.

"I am honored to join Okanagan College and look forward to working with a dedicated team to create an inclusive, technologically advanced learning environment that supports all students," said Mackie. "I look forward to working together with the team at OC to encourage people in our region to consider the wide range of exciting health care programs available at the College, and in doing so, to pursue a rewarding career."

A lifelong learner herself, Mackie holds multiple certificates in leadership, underscoring her dedication to continuous professional development. She has made significant scholarly contributions to the health care education field, including working on the importance and impact of high-fidelity simulation and virtual reality in health care education.

"We are delighted to welcome Patrena Mackie to Okanagan College. Her extensive experience and innovative approach to education will be invaluable in advancing our mission to provide high-quality, accessible education to all. I am confident that under her leadership, the Health and Social Development department will continue to thrive and grow," said Samantha Lenci, OC's Provost and Vice President Academic.

Okanagan College would also like to acknowledge the significant contributions to the College's health care programming made by Joanne Gibbons-Smyth, who has served as the Interim Dean of Health and Social Development since March. "Joanne's leadership and dedication during this transitional period have been greatly appreciated. Her efforts have ensured the continued success and stability of the department" said Lenci.

Patrena Mackie will officially join Okanagan College on September 9, 2024.
