September 20, 2024

On September 13, 2024, students, staff, and faculty from both Canadore College and Nipissing University gathered to celebrate the 19th Annual Welcome Back Pow Wow, held beside the scenic pond behind the Education Centre. This cherished event, a collaborative effort between the two institutions, marked the start of the Fall Term and honoured Indigenous culture within the campus community.

"The Welcome Back Pow Wow is a really fun and social event that celebrates all new and returning students to Nipissing University and Canadore College," said Emily Couchie, Manager, Indigenous Student Success at Nipissing University's Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

The event featured captivating dances, traditional songs, vibrant regalia, and a celebratory feast. Attendees had the chance to immerse themselves in Indigenous culture and foster connections with fellow students, making it a memorable experience for all.

"Hosting the pow wow is an essential way for us to honour our commitment to Indigenous education and cultural celebration," said Sarah Julian, Director of the First Peoples' Centre and Indigenous Engagement at Canadore College. "Working alongside Nipissing University to create this welcoming space allows students and the community to learn from and appreciate Indigenous traditions."

"As a first-year student, I feel it is important to have the pow wow here on campus to bring awareness and connection to Indigenous students and surrounding communities," said Canadore College student Emily Peltier. "Non-Indigenous students have the opportunity to learn and share with others about Indigenous culture and values.

"The pow wow is not only a celebration; it's a space where we honour, learn, participate, and appreciate the diverse cultures that enrich our university environment," added Romeo Fournier, Director, Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

The 19th Annual Welcome Back Pow Wow highlighted the strong partnership between Canadore College and Nipissing University, organized by Nipissing University's Enji giigdoyang - Office of Indigenous Initiatives and Canadore College's First Peoples' Centre.
