LANGARA COLLEGE
Langara's Flexible Design & Development Program lets students learn while they work

October 24, 2024

Did you know that the average Canadian has around 40 apps on their mobile device? Last year alone, Canadians downloaded 1.23 billion apps, a testament to the app market potential.

Starting in January 2025, Langara's Web and Mobile App Design and Development program is introducing a cohort tailored to working professionals, international students, or other students who require a more flexible schedule.

Though the curriculum will remain the same as our traditional 16-month program, the new schedule will allow students to complete the program over 24 months through a mix of evening, weekend, and online classes. The program will offer four classes per term, two online and two face-to-face on Saturdays. With three semesters per year (January, May, and September), students can expect to finish six terms in two years.

The Pathway to a New Digital Career

The WMDD program is perfect for anyone looking to upgrade their current skills, make a career change, or enter the digital field. There is no need for prior experience with web or mobile design. Aside from a willingness to learn, the only requirement is that students have obtained a bachelor's degree or equivalent.

"We often hear people wondering if they can become developers," shares Jesica Ortega, a WMDD program instructor and assistant coordinator. "But our program starts from zero and covers the basics of HTML, CSS, and web programming - so it's a fantastic opportunity for all types of professionals. Because we start from the beginning, we have had students from all backgrounds, even including doctors."

Throughout the program, students will complete several projects, both individually and in teams, from concept to development. They will produce real-world projects, develop digital portfolios, and build industry connections. Students will showcase their final projects to a panel of companies, many of whom have hired students directly following their presentations.

"The instructors are fully committed to getting you ready to work," said Diego Almedia, a Term 3 WWMD student. "Their workshops will help you understand the industry better and will also provide you with practical tips to better present your resume or to prepare for technical interviews. There are also loads of networking events on-campus and outside campus."

From Concept to Development

The WMDD program equips students with web design, programming, user experience and user interface design, and Artificial Intelligence skills through hands-on projects and small classes with dedicated instructional assistants, preparing them for a career in digital technology.

"If you check online for a web design or programming program in Vancouver, you'll soon discover that our future-forward and student-focused approach is what makes the WMDD program at Langara truly unique"

Upon application, students can either enter the Designer or Developer stream, though it is possible to change focus during the second term. Once they've selected a stream, they will take classes on web and mobile app design and development fundamentals such as visual aesthetics, client and server programming, user experience design, and project management.

"Unlike other programs, our two cohorts work together and have some classes in common," said Ortega. "Having designers and developers in the same program allows students to create viable projects that they can show to potential employers. This collaborative approach is a real benefit that no other program can offer in British Columbia."

Because of Langara's unique curriculum structure and delivery model, students are prepared for a range of different career opportunities after completing the WMDD program. Through our Developer stream, graduates have become full-stack developers, front and back-end developers, database managers, and project managers for both web and mobile application development. Many who completed the Designer stream, begun careers in UX/UI design, product design, web design, mobile design, web development, and project management in a wide range of companies.
