November 6, 2024

Lakeland College has welcomed a new member to the Board of Governors. A.J. Mokelky, brings a wealth of experience as a lawyer, a graduate of the Lloydminster education system and an alumnus of Lakeland's university transfer program.

Mokelky grew up in Lloydminster. He attended university transfer at Lakeland in 2010 before graduating from the University of Saskatchewan Edwards School of business in 2014. He graduated with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 2018. During a gap year in his studies, he returned to Lloydminster and worked for the Regional Business Accelerator (now Startup Lloydminster). Currently, Mokelky is a lawyer at Revering Law Office in Lloydminster, focusing on corporate and commercial law, real estate, wills and estates and civil litigation.

"It's an honour to welcome A.J. to the board," says Adam Waterman, chair of the Lakeland College Board of Directors. "He has experience both with his law and business background and as a student within the region. His voice will bring an important perspective to our discussions and decisions as we move forward plotting the course for the future of Lakeland College."

In addition to his professional work, Mokelky provides pro bono services for multiple societies and non-profits in Lloydminster and the surrounding area. He sits on the Board of Directors for Startup Lloydminster, an organization that fosters entrepreneurial growth in the region. He is also chair of the governance committee for Startup Lloydminster.

Mokelky is excited to become involved with Lakeland on a governance level, saying, "Some of my earliest memories of Lakeland College include playing Border City Basketball every weekend in the college gymnasium from the time I was five years old and attending as a student many years later. Lakeland's university transfer program allowed me to explore several areas of study in one year and helped me discover where my interests and passions lay."

"We are excited to welcome A.J. to the board, not only for his experience as a lawyer in the community, but because of the experience he brings as a past Lakeland student," says Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland College. "It's always amazing to see where our students go after they leave Lakeland, and just as exciting to welcome them home again. I can't wait to work with AJ as we plan the future of Lakeland College together."

The board consists of 12 members, including Lakeland's president and CEO as an ex-officio member, public members appointed by the provincial government, staff members and student members.

The Board of Governors is responsible for managing the college on behalf of the citizens of Alberta.
