KEYANO COLLEGE
Keyano Gala 2024 Proudly Celebrates the Beauty of Canada and Honours the Inspiring Achievements of Our Distinguished Alumni

November 12, 2024

From the banks of Newfoundland to the golden prairies and the vibrant lights of Toronto to the Rocky Mountains, Canada's beauty is undeniable. This was also true for the 900 guests who attended the sold-out Keyano Gala 2024, presented by Bouchier, on Saturday, November 2, 2024.

This year's Gala featured performances by the Trans-Canada Highwaymen and the Derina Harvey Band, presented by entertainment sponsors Fort McKay First Nation, Fort McKay Group of Companies, and Birch Mountain Enterprises.

Since its establishment in 1981, the Gala has emerged as a vital fundraising initiative for the college, bringing together faculty, students, alumni, and community members to celebrate academic and athletic achievements. This annual event underscores the college's commitment to academic excellence by generating resources that enhance essential learning tools, such as library materials, laboratory equipment, and technological upgrades. Furthermore, the funds raised are crucial in supporting athletic programs by funding necessary equipment and offering scholarships for student-athletes.

"The consistent and generous support for the Keyano Gala showcases the community's strong belief in the importance of higher education. This commitment reflects our shared values and dedication to educating the leaders of tomorrow," said Dr. Sandra Efu, Interim President and CEO of Keyano College.

"We are honoured to be presenting sponsor of the Keyano Gala for the third year. By investing in education, we make a lasting impact within the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo community to help shape future generations" Nicole Bourque-Bouchier, CEO & Co-Owner of Bouchier.

The Gala also regularly celebrates the annual Distinguished Alumni. This special honour recognizes former students who have made a significant impact in their communities, achieved excellence in their careers, and positively influenced the lives of others. The finalists for 2024 included Melanie Antoine (Aboriginal Entrepreneurship, 2009), Nicole Cormier (University Studies, 2023), and Sheldon Germain (University Studies, 1992).

This year's recipient, Sheldon Germain, has made remarkable contributions to athletics, inspiring many in various capacities. As the head coach of the Keyano Huskies women's volleyball team, he was crucial in establishing the first men's volleyball team. Additionally, he shared his passion for the sport by serving as a colour commentator for ACAC TV.

Sheldon's dedication to supporting student-athletes is evident in his promotion of scholarship programs and his efforts to enhance local sports facilities, particularly the SSWC. He exemplifies a strong commitment to education and public service with over 25 years of experience in education and administration and 19 years as a councillor for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).

This year's Gala beautifully highlighted the incredible impact that our collective efforts have in nurturing future leaders and improving the educational experiences for everyone involved. "Keyano is deeply grateful to each one of you who donated, attended, bid, volunteered, or offered your support. Your contributions truly matter and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us," said Chantal Beaver, Associate Vice President for Public Engagement at the College.
