NORTHWESTERN POLYTECHNIC
Emergency Medical Responder Program Fast Approaching

January 7, 2025

Northwestern Polytechnic's (NWP) new Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) training certificate launch is on the fast track, with applications now open for the Spring 2025 intake.

Following approval to develop the program this past year, a generous equipment donation from the Regional EMS Foundation, and significant consultation with first-response agencies and local community leaders, the much-anticipated School of Health addition is ready to accept students.

"This is a timely and impactful program offering for our learning community and a great way to kick off the new year," said NWP President and CEO Vanessa Sheane. "The EMR program will fill an important need in the region while offering students access to a dynamic and rewarding career path."

As the province continues to navigate a shortage of qualified EMRs, partners have come together to develop various customized solutions for healthcare training, recruitment and retention in the region.

"We have continued to field significant interest as we have been working to expand our various healthcare career pathways," says NWP Provost and Vice President Academic, Dr. Terry Kowalchuk. "This spring, we will be able to accept up to two dozen EMR students, and plans are in the works for additional fall and winter intakes pending interest."

Fully aligned with the Alberta Credential Framework, the new EMR program includes 135 hours of online classroom theory and another 164 hours of clinical learning. Students will have the opportunity to put their training into practice during ambulance placements and at NWP's Health Education Centre, which is conveniently located within the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and features leading-edge simulation environments to enable hands-on skill development.

"Emergency Medical Responder students can look forward to immersive learning," says School of Health Dean, Megan Stone Stone. "Throughout the 12-credit certificate, they will explore the fundamentals of treating patients during medical emergencies, including ambulance and first response vehicle operation, emergency scene and patient assessment, and pre-hospital patient care."

The program aligns with NWP's commitment to responsive, career-focused education. By addressing current workforce gaps, the institution continues to support the economic and social well-being of its surrounding communities.

As certified EMRs, program graduates will collaborate closely with physicians, paramedics, fire services, and search and rescue teams to deliver lifesaving, on-the-spot medical interventions. Graduates may choose to enter the workforce immediately or go on to pursue other credentials in the healthcare field by laddering into the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) certification.

Applications are now open. Visit NWP.me/Health to learn more about the program and secure your spot.
