Saskatchewan Polytechnic is upgrading its fleet with a second ALSIM flight simulator. This new flight simulator would not be possible without a $450,000 investment from PrairiesCan. The new ALSIM ALX simulates four different classes of aircraft including single-engine piston, twin engine piston, twin turbine and medium category twin jet and seven different flight models.
ALSIM flight simulators provide Commercial Pilot students with programmable real-life scenarios that include flying in all kinds of weather and dealing with emergencies and standard operating procedures, risk free. The ALSIM ALX is a comprehensive tool that supports students from initial training through to multi-crew cooperation (MCC), ensuring students are well-prepared for airline operations. Equipped with advanced technology, the ALX can be configured to meet specific training requirements in a controlled setting. Additionally, simulation learning is a cost-effective way to train as it eliminates costs associated with fuel, aircraft maintenance and rental fees. The new ALSIM ALX simulator allows students to have more access to flight hours and can help attract more students to the program.

"Our government is proud to partner with Sask Polytech to expand pilot training for more students," said the Honourable Terry Duguid, Minister for PrairiesCan. "This funding, together with our other recent investments including the Dziret'ái Pilot Training Program for Indigenous residents in Northern Saskatchewan and the Regina Flying Club is helping address critical pilot shortages in Saskatchewan and across Canada, while supporting well-paying jobs in aviation and beyond."
"We are grateful for the PrairiesCan investment in our Commercial Pilot program, enabling us to purchase the ALSIM ALX flight simulator," says Dr. Larry Rosia, Sask Polytech president and CEO. "This investment is instrumental in providing our students with cutting-edge and innovative equipment, enabling them to gain the skills and experience necessary for successful careers in aviation. Thank you for supporting current students, future students and the advancement of post-secondary education."
Simulators allow for repeated practice of specific maneuvers and procedures, helping students quickly improve and perfect their skills. "Modern simulators, like the ALSIM ALX, offer highly realistic environments with advanced technology that replicates the look and feel of an actual cockpit," says Reed Willison, Sask Polytech Commercial Pilot program head and instructor. "With this new flight simulator students can experience various weather conditions, turbulence and other flight challenges in a controlled setting. This ALSIM ALX is particularly useful for learning complex tasks that require a steep learning curve, like engine failure on takeoff, flying under high wind conditions and working as a team in an emergency. Thank you to PrairiesCan for investing in our Commercial Pilot program."
In 2021 Sask Polytech purchased the AL250 simulator, which has six configurations that represent several different types of piston aircraft. This simulator features advanced technology that provides vibration cues, simulating actions like engine start-up to enhance the realism of flight training. The addition of the ALSIM ALX, alongside the AL250, significantly boosts training capacity. Students can now train on both simulators simultaneously, and the ALX offers extended training capabilities with different flight models beyond piston aircraft. This second simulator will provide many years of high quality, effective training.
"It is an honor to have been selected, once again, by Sask Polytech for the opportunity to provide their Commercial Pilot diploma program with the ALSIM ALX flight training device," says Jason Da Costa, ALSIM Business Development and Sales manager - North America. "With seven different flight models and fully Transport Canada approved, the ALX provides an outstanding return on investment. ALSIM's continued partnership with Sask Polytech reinforces our commitment to providing the highest level of flight training excellence in collaboration with a leading Canadian aviation institution."
