Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) is pleased to announce that its new Social Work Diploma program has been officially approved and is now accepting applications for Fall 2025.
This two-year diploma program prepares graduates for careers in various settings, including government agencies, healthcare centers, schools, and non-profit organizations. Upon completion, graduates will be eligible to apply to become Registered Social Workers in Alberta.
"This milestone reflects our commitment to developing programs that meet the evolving needs of our communities," says Dr. Terry Kowalchuk, Provost and Vice-President at NWP. "By offering a Social Work Diploma program locally, we are helping to build a skilled workforce that can make a lasting impact on the well-being of northern communities."
The program will provide students with a comprehensive curriculum, including coursework in social work practice, humanities, and behavioral sciences, as well as hands-on practicum experiences. These experiential learning opportunities will allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, ensuring they graduate ready for the workforce.
"This is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about making a difference in people's lives," says Dr. Julia Dutove, Dean of the School of Applied Science and Technology. "With a growing demand for social workers, our graduates will be well-prepared to step into meaningful and impactful roles across Alberta."
The program has been made possible through the Mental Health Professions Enrolment Expansion grant from the Government of Alberta.
Prospective students interested in joining the Fall 2025 cohort are encouraged to visit the NWP website for more information on program details and the application process. Academic advisors are also available to assist with inquiries and guide applicants through the next steps.
