Keyano College was proud to host the annual Alberta Deans of Business Case Competition, held March 13-15. Eleven teams from post-secondary institutions throughout Alberta competed, analyzing and presenting solutions to a real-world live business case provided by Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM). Portage College earned first place, with Medicine Hat College and NAIT securing second and third place, respectively.
This year's competition theme focused on travel and its associated opportunities. The event kicked off on the night of March 13 with a keynote speech by Matt Bailey, CEO of Must Do Canada, Must Do Media and the Tourism Industry Association of Canada's 2022 Travel Media Award winner. Matt shared his experiences as a travel blogger, YouTuber, and business owner. He emphasized the adventures awaiting travel in Canada and inspired Canadians with potential travel experiences. He is also used in K-12 education to teach students about Canadian history and culture.
On Friday, March 14th, the eleven teams were presented with a business challenge: how can Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) increase its passenger volumes and reduce the number of passengers driving to other airports to board flights? Students received a case package containing research reports, annual reports, and airport surveys, which they had to analyze within 10 hours. The students then presented their solutions to a panel of judges, including Michael Sieger, vice-president of air service and commercial development; Jessica Lipton, manager of marketing and communications; and Mark Dunn, CPA and owner of Bazylo and Dunn. The students' strong suggestions for addressing passenger leakage impressed the judges. Sieger said, "Despite the challenging environment, the students presented creative solutions that we are eager to explore further. We will take some great ideas from all the presenting groups."
