Fanshawe College is suspending all future intakes for 40 programs, effective fall 2025. An additional five programs will have local intakes suspended at regional campuses but will continue in London. The decision was endorsed by the College's Board of Governors at its March 27 meeting.
All students currently enrolled in affected programs will have the opportunity to complete and graduate from their program. However, no new students will be admitted to those programs.
"We are committed to providing students in affected programs with the same quality of education and support they expected when they chose to study at Fanshawe," says Fanshawe President Peter Devlin. "We also remain committed to the future of our regional campuses and the students and employers who count on us in the communities we serve."
The decision follows a comprehensive and evidence-based evaluation of the College's 220+ programs that looked at:
- declining enrollment over time;
- post-graduate work permit eligibility (where applicable);
- financial viability and sustainability; and
- regional and provincial labour market demand.
"Declining international enrolment and stagnant provincial funding have limited our ability to maintain programs that are no longer financially viable or aligned with student and labour market needs," Devlin says. "While these decisions are difficult, they are necessary to ensure we can continue delivering high-quality education where it's needed most."
Full-time enrolment is expected to drop by 36 per cent over the next two years, largely due to the federal government cap on international enrolment. Further, Ontario colleges receive the lowest per-student funding in Canada (44 per cent of the national average), which places pressure on institutions. As a result, Fanshawe is facing a projected cumulative deficit of approximately $95M to March 2026.
