Holland College Suspends Eight Programs for 2025/26 Academic Year

April 14, 2025

Holland College announced that it will be suspending the intake of eight programs for the 2025/26 academic year. Three other programs will be downsized due to reduced enrollment. These decisions are in response to a sharp decrease in the college's international student enrollment and come at a time when the college is working with the province to address on-going financial challenges.

Many post-secondary institutions nationwide are experiencing significant decreases in international student enrollment because of recent changes in Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) policies. It is now much more difficult for foreign students attending Holland College to obtain a study permit and, on graduation, a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). The college's international student enrollment will decrease from a high of 799 in 2024 to approximately 140 in 2026; a drop of about 83%.

Holland College is working with the province to address issues outlined in its 2023 Funding Model Review. The college received a significant increase to last year's funding envelope. That support is continuing this year, along with a commitment to work with the college on an ongoing basis to address these funding pressures.

"Holland College has always been committed to providing high-quality education and opportunities for both domestic and international students," said Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald, Holland College President & CEO. "While we regret having to take this unprecedented step, we must respond to these new realities to maintain the integrity and viability of our programs and ensure our long-term financial sustainability."

The affected programs will be listed on the college's website, and current students enrolled in these programs will be provided with guidance and support to complete their studies. The college is also working closely with stakeholders to assess long-term solutions and potential adjustments to future program offerings.

Holland College remains dedicated to supporting students and ensuring that they receive the best possible educational experience. Prospective students and stakeholders with questions regarding the changes are encouraged to visit Holland College Mitigation Strategy FAQs for more information.
