GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE
George Brown launches newly revamped online ASL certificate program for September 2025

April 28, 2025

George Brown College is proud to announce a refreshed online version of our popular American Sign Language and Deaf Studies (C144) program. Beginning in September 2025, the updated program will continue to award an Ontario College Certificate and be delivered entirely online, making American Sign Language (ASL) education more accessible than ever across the province.

A unique educational opportunity

The one-year, full-time online program is the first of its kind in Ontario, welcoming both non-Deaf and Deaf students. Structured across two semesters, the program provides intensive training in American Sign Language (ASL) and English, combining language skills development with cultural understanding and awareness of current social issues affecting Deaf communities.

"This online program represents our ongoing commitment to providing an accessible, high-quality education in ASL," said Dr. Morris Anthony Beckford, Associate Dean of the School of Deaf & Deafblind Studies.

Erika Stebbings, C144's program coordinator, states that "by removing geographical barriers, we are creating opportunities for students throughout Ontario to cultivate an orientation to Deaf culture and current social issues affecting the Deaf and ASL communities while equipping graduates to make meaningful contributions in various professional settings where ASL skills are increasingly valued."

Program structure and focus

Students will develop practical ASL communication skills through a curriculum that includes:

  • Beginner to intermediate conversational ASL proficiency
  • Enhanced English for ASL students
  • Understanding of Deaf culture and community dynamics
  • Introduction to anti-oppressive practices

The program offers immersive language learning experiences through ASL Immersion and Seminar courses in both semesters, complemented by foundations in communication and studies of signed language communities. To build real-world competence, students will practice their skills through simulations and interactive class activities.

Career enhancement and pathways

ASL proficiency creates valuable opportunities across multiple sectors, including healthcare, education, social services, and business. The certificate serves as an excellent foundation for those considering George Brown's Honours Bachelor of Interpretation program, Deafblind & Intervenor program, or wishing to combine ASL with another professional discipline.
