May 20, 2025

George Brown College (GBC) School of Accounting and Finance students showcased their analytical prowess and business acumen by securing first place at the Ontario Colleges Accounting Case Competition (OCACC) held on March 29, 2025, at Humber Polytechnic in Toronto.

Championship performance

The competition challenged participants to analyze a real-world business case revealed only on the day of the event. Teams were given just two hours in isolation to develop strategic recommendations before delivering a 15-minute presentation followed by a five-minute Q&A session with the judges.

The winning team from GBC's Centre for Business comprised Erubey Lechuga Molina, Meckie Zheng, and Jake Chunkapura, who demonstrated exceptional analytical skills and strategic thinking in the competition. Their outstanding performance impressed the judges, who noted, "It is clear that this team was very well educated in current events and able to frame the case in the current economic and financial international context."

Supporting the winning team were dedicated faculty advisors and coaches Andrea Chance and Deirdre Fitzpatrick, along with alternates Sofiia Paitsun and Vanessa MnCube, participants from last year's OCACC, who provided valuable mentorship that helped the team achieve its triumphant standing.

Leadership celebrates success

"This outstanding victory reflects the exceptional talent and dedication of our students. Such accomplishments don't happen by chance they're the result of rigorous preparation and the unwavering support of our faculty advisors," said Dr. Eileen DeCourcy, Vice-President Academic at George Brown College, who praised the achievement."

John Peco, Associate Dean of the Schools of Marketing, Accounting and Finance, emphasized the significance of the win. "Our students' ability to analyze complex scenarios and present strategic solutions under pressure speaks volumes about the quality of our programs at George Brown College. We couldn't be prouder of their accomplishment."

Looking forward

GBC will host colleges from across the province for next year's Ontario Colleges Accounting Case Competition on March 28, 2026, providing an opportunity to showcase both the institution's facilities and its commitment to accounting education excellence.
