Two members of the Conestoga security team were honoured with awards at the spring conference of the Ontario Association of College and University Security Administrators (OACUSA) held in Ottawa from May 5 - 8.
Rick Fraser and Susete Araujo-Vizinho were honoured with awards from the Ontario Association of College and University Security Administrators.
Susete Araujo-Vizinho, manager of campus security, received the Outstanding Achievement and Initiative award; Rick Fraser, manager of emergency management, received the Emerging Leader Award.
The honours are well deserved, said Kirsty Bradley-McMurtrie, associate vice-president, Risk.
"I am incredibly proud of the outstanding work our security team does every day to ensure the safety and well-being of our campus community. Their professionalism, vigilance and commitment to creating a secure, inclusive environment that allows our students, faculty and staff to focus on what matters - learning and thriving," Bradley-McMurtrie said. "It's a privilege to support such a dedicated group, and I'm grateful for the trust placed in us to help make Conestoga a safe and welcoming space for all."
The association commended Araujo-Vizinho for her transformative work in enhancing campus safety, pointing to her most impactful initiative of creating the Security Special Events Team.
As a core member of the special events committee, Araujo-Vizinho connects weekly with stakeholders from across the college to assess risks and craft tailored security plans that ensure safe, inclusive and well-managed events. Recognizing the need for specialized event security, Araujo-Vizinho spearheaded the formation of a dedicated team in partnership with Conestoga and its contract security provider.
"This initiative not only improved event safety but also provided professional development opportunities for security personnel. Her leadership has significantly elevated the college's reputation for safety and inclusivity, making her a deserving recipient of this prestigious award," the association said.
Araujo-Vizinho feels deeply honoured to receive the award.
"This recognition is especially meaningful as a proud Conestoga alumna. I'm grateful to be part of such a dedicated team and to contribute to the safety and well-being of our campus community. A heartfelt thank you to our leader, Kirsty, whose inspiring guidance makes our success possible."
Fraser was recognized for his exceptional leadership, innovation and dedication to advancing emergency preparedness and risk mitigation in the post-secondary sector.
Since joining Conestoga in January 2024, Fraser has revitalized the college's emergency management program, overseeing the emergency operations centre, updating emergency plans and leading comprehensive training and drills. "His collaborative approach has strengthened partnerships with municipal emergency services across eight cities, ensuring a co-ordinated and effective crisis response," the association said.
Fraser also actively mentors colleagues, engages with professional organizations such as the International Association of Emergency Managers and promotes a culture of continuous learning. "His community spirit was also on display when he led the Campus Safety and Security team in the Dodgeball for Danny charity tournament, fostering camaraderie and supporting a meaningful cause."
Fraser said recognition from peers across the province shows the reach of the security efforts on campus. "The work we are doing and impacts we are making here at Conestoga are getting noticed at other institutions," he said.
"This recognition, although unexpected, is appreciated and is also a testament to all the hard work of a very solid team at the college and support our department is afforded to do what we do for the Conestoga community."
