Conestoga's aviation programs showcased at Girls Can Fly event

June 2, 2025

Students in Conestoga's Commercial Flight Operations program hosted fun activities at the annual Girls Can Fly event, held May 10 at the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre in Breslau.

The free educational event featured aircraft of all sizes, flight simulators, complimentary flights for girls aged 8 to 18, and industry partners with the aim of inspiring young women and girls about the exciting opportunities in the aviation industry.

"Representation in the skies starts on the ground with opportunities, encouragement and events like Girls Can Fly. We were thrilled to have Conestoga's aviation program staff and students participate in this important community event," said Joni Jean, chair of the School of Engineering & Technology and School of Trades & Apprenticeship.

Conestoga provided two activities while showcasing the Commercial Flight Operations and Commercial Helicopter Foundations programs and answering questions about pathways into the aviation industry.

Students helped more than 200 girls build 3D printed airplanes and try a welding simulator. Since the aviation program is offered through the School of Engineering & Technology, they wanted to offer hands-on activities from aviation and STEM fields.

Jessica Smuck, aviation program co-ordinator, said the day was a great success that hopefully encouraged young girls to consider careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.

"It's events like these that show young women (and their siblings) there are so many options open to them and to inspire women to pursue aviation careers," Smuck said.

Conestoga's Commercial Flight Operations program prepares students for a career as a professional pilot. The current unprecedented demand and projected growth in the aviation industry offers numerous opportunities to excel post-graduation. Modern flight simulators will provide an opportunity for practical training through advanced avionics and realistic emergency scenarios in a variety of weather conditions.

Students have the option to concurrently complete flight training which qualifies them to apply for Canadian Commercial Pilot Licence endorsed with a Multi-Engine Instrument Rating. Those who choose to work as a pilot post-graduation will need to complete flight training with partner Spectrum Airways, which grants Transport Canada licences upon completion and required examination.

The Commercial Helicopter Foundations program prepares students for a career as a professional helicopter pilot. Students enrolled in this program have the option to complete ground school and flight training concurrently with Great Lakes Helicopter, which qualifies them to apply for Canadian Commercial Pilot License - Helicopter.

Both programs are offered at the Milton - Parkhill Drive campus.
