The Princess Auto Foundation presented Conestoga with $50,000 in ongoing support of the Princess Auto Foundation Awards, bringing their giving to the college over the past 13 years to $620,000.
The Princess Auto Foundation provides financial assistance to students enrolled in pre-employment skilled trades and technology programs at Canadian colleges, which administer their own awards. Recipients have an unmet financial need and demonstrated academic skills that will give them a high probability of successfully completing their program.
"Conestoga is incredibly proud of our longstanding partnership with the Princess Auto Foundation. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to student success and their generous support in helping turn dreams into reality," said Julie Gillis, director of Donor Relations & Stewardship.
Thanks to the generosity of Conestoga donors including the Princess Auto Foundation, 2,554 students were supported in their learning with financial awards in 2023-2024.
Here are a few of the recipients of Princess Auto Foundation bursaries:
Cohen White, a student in the Electrical Engineering Technician program, feels incredibly honoured to receive the financial support. Throughout high school and his first year of college, White worked at a landscaping company to earn money for his education. Yet he still found it difficult in his first year to stay on top of his studies and work enough hours to cover expenses.
Princess Auto Foundation changed that for White: "Because of your generosity, I have been able to dedicate more time and energy to excelling in my coursework and getting the most out of my college experience. Your support not only lightens my financial load but also reminds me that there are individuals and organizations that believe in the value of education and in helping students succeed. For that, I am truly grateful."
Jessica Nippard recently completed the one-year Welding Techniques program and plans to gain her Red Seal in welding. The scholarship eased her financial burden, and more. "It also alleviated stress, allowing me to fully focus on my studies, after which I was able to get a job and start my career in industry."
Aleksandr Kashin is pursuing a new career aligned with his passion for hands-on work and the financial support has been invaluable as he pursues his studies in the Electro Mechanical and Automation Maintenance program.
"I'm proud to say that I've been selected for a co-op position in the industry, which is now a very competitive achievement due to the uncertainties across the job market. My goal is to maintain an overall average above 90 per cent and continue building both practical skills and technical knowledge that will help me become a skilled automation technician," said Kashin, thanking the foundation.
"Your support is a big encouragement and truly makes a difference."
Zain Ali is currently in the Motive Power Technician - Truck and Coach program, finding the courses challenging and also igniting his passion for the field.
"My goal for the future is to earn the truck and coach mechanic licence and master this profession. I aspire to make a meaningful impact in my community and contribute positively to my chosen industry," said Ali, adding that the bursary "brings me one step closer to achieving these dreams, allowing me to focus more on my studies rather than financial concerns."
He greatly appreciates the generosity and belief in students. "Your support is not just financial; it inspires me to work hard and strive for excellence in my studies. I hope one day to give back to others in the same way you have helped me."
Each year, Conestoga's Student Financial Services administers more than 400 awards, bursaries and scholarships worth more than $4.6 million, including $2 million in donor-funded awards.
