Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) is again adding to its program portfolio with a new Graphic Design Diploma starting Fall 2026.
This dynamic two-year diploma prepares students for creative careers in areas such as advertising, marketing, publishing, web design, and digital media. Graduates will leave with a strong portfolio, industry-relevant skills, and the creative confidence to thrive in today's fast-paced design world.
"Not only does this program reflect our dedication to providing innovative, in-demand, and career-focused education, but it also complements our established Computer Science, Business, and Fine Arts pathways," says Dr. Vanessa Sheane, NWP President and CEO. "We recognize that the digital landscape is continuing to evolve, and NWP is doing our part by bringing disciplines together and equipping them for success."
The curriculum offers a blend of foundational design theory, digital media production, typography, branding, and user experience (UX) design. Students will also gain valuable hands-on experience through lab-based learning and real-world projects.
"Graphic design plays a vital role in how we connect and communicate in today's digital age," says Dr. Julia Dutove, Dean of the School of Applied Science and Technology. "This program prepares students with the tools and mindset to make a creative impact and pursue diverse design careers across multiple industries."
The addition of a Graphic Design Diploma is further proof of NWP's commitment to expanding creative and applied learning opportunities in northern Alberta. The Polytechnic will join Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) as the only other provider of this highly sought-after program for aspiring visual communicators.
"Although the program is scheduled to begin in Fall 2026, future students can get a jump start on their program by speaking to an NWP Academic Advisor," says Vice-President Academic, Dr. Jodi Peebles. "There are multiple foundational courses that can be taken now through our Open Studies pathways that will prepare learners for full entry into the diploma program when it launches."
