Justin Purnoko, a third-semester Food and Beverage Management student, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Doug Smith Futures Award by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO). The recognition marks the second consecutive year that a George Brown student has received this prestigious industry award.
Purnoko received the honour at the Ontario Tourism Awards of Excellence Gala in Ottawa on October 29, 2025. The award recognizes a post-secondary student in Ontario's hospitality, tourism, culinary, or business programs who shows exceptional dedication to finance and leadership potential within the industry.

A legacy of excellence
Named in memory of Nieuport Aviation's former Chief Financial Officer, Doug Smith, the award reflects Smith's legacy of resilience, mentorship, and financial expertise. It recognizes individuals who embody his values of collaboration and dedication to the tourism sector.
For the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, this win marks a notable achievement. Last year's recipient, alumna Setareh Solemaninasab, now works with the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts group and is just one of many talented and driven new leaders entering the industry. Recognizing students twice in a row from applicants across the province highlights the calibre of talent emerging from George Brown's programs and reflects a promising future for Ontario's tourism industry.
A unifying vision for hospitality
Purnoko's passion for the industry goes beyond the operational aspects of hospitality. "I have always admired the way hospitality services connect people," he explains. "I believe that hospitality, specifically food, can be used as a way to open the door to having difficult yet necessary conversations in our world. It is a unifying force in a world full of uncertainty."
His interest in finance stems from a pragmatic understanding of the industry's challenges. Understanding finance, he notes, equips him with the tools necessary to succeed in this often difficult and competitive field, where smart operations can offset risk and drive long-term growth.
Purnoko emphasizes that his commitment to the industry was already firmly established. "My desire to work in this field was solidified in my first semester at George Brown," he says. "However, I can say that this award has validated my hard work and has motivated me to continue striving forward and better myself with each passing day."
Real-world learning and community
Purnoko credits his program for helping him realize his potential. Real-world learning experiences combined with supportive peers and passionate instructors have created an environment that pushes students to excel.
As part of his award, Purnoko will have the opportunity to complete a one-week paid internship with Nieuport Aviation, the owner and operator of the passenger terminal at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The experience will allow him to explore the various departments and operations within the airport environment, further broadening his understanding of the tourism industry.
