RED DEER POLYTECHNIC
Learning, Leading and Remembering: Canadian Armed Forces Reservists at RDP

November 12, 2025

Three Canadian Army Reservists attending Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) are proving that military service and academic success go hand in hand. Wyatt Paul, Drew Adkins and Bridget Anderson bring a unique blend of discipline, teamwork and national pride to their studies, shaped by their experiences in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Reserve.

For Wyatt Paul, a first-year student in Red Deer Polytechnic's Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation and Visual Effects program, the CAF Reserve offered something few experiences could: adventure, purpose and the chance to learn skills beyond the ordinary. Hailing from Okotoks, Paul joined 41 Signal Regiment just a year ago, driven by a desire to embrace challenges and contribute to something greater than himself.

One of his most memorable moments came during Operation LENTUS, where he supported the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, in battling wildfires across Saskatchewan. "Working on the fire line with reservists from Alberta and BC taught me the power of teamwork and camaraderie," shares Paul.

These lessons have translated into his academic life, where the discipline and outdoor skills he's gained help him balance creative pursuits with personal growth. Thanks to the part-time wages and flexible hours offered by the CAF, Paul can focus on his studies while still enjoying time with friends and nature.

Bridget Anderson, also a member of 41 Signal Regiment, echoes Paul's appreciation for the Reserve's flexibility. A resident of Blackfalds, Anderson never imagined herself in uniform, but now, she says, "Joining the Army was one of the best decisions I've ever made."

Her deployment to Latvia in support of NATO's multinational brigade stands out as a defining experience, alongside field exercises in Canada where she manages radio traffic.

Anderson credits her time in the Reserves with helping her develop time management, leadership and stress management skills - tools that have proven invaluable in her academic journey as a Bachelor of Business Administration student at RDP.

"The support from Red Deer Polytechnic has meant the world to me," she says. "It's allowed me to pursue a career I love without sacrificing my education."

Whether she's off-roading, working radios or pulling through sleepless nights, Anderson finds joy in every moment of service.

For Drew Adkins, the connection between military service and education runs deep. A Red Deer native and student in the Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies program, Adkins has served in the Reserves for 24 years. His journey began with childhood curiosity and grew into a lifelong commitment.

"The Army Reserve in Red Deer gave me the chance to see if I'd enjoy it," he reflects. "I still do."

One of Adkins' most poignant memories is from Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2011, when he stood among fellow soldiers as the Canadian flag was lowered at Kandahar Airfield for the final time.

"Everyone saluting and singing 'O Canada' - it was a moment that honoured a decade of sacrifice and service," he recalls.

That sense of duty continues to shape his post-secondary life, where military discipline and time management help him stay focused and organized. Adkins first attended RDP in 2002 with summer military training covering his tuition. Now, he's back to finish his degree, grateful for the institution's ongoing support of CAF members.

Across all three experiences, one theme stands out: the significance of Remembrance Day. For Paul, it's about honouring those who served before him and carrying forward their legacy. Anderson sees it as a time to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who risked their lives for Canada. Adkins views it as a moment to recognize the ongoing dedication of CAF members, past and present.

Red Deer Polytechnic's support for reservists is vast. It's a commitment to empowering students who serve. From flexible schedules to a culture of respect, RDP ensures that its reservist students can thrive both in uniform and in the classroom.

"Canada needs a strong and educated military to defend Canadians, and I'm grateful for RDP's support of the Canadian Armed Forces," notes Adkins.

Building on this proud legacy, Red Deer Polytechnic has welcomed numerous current and former members of the CAF, including veterans, as both students and valued employees, enriching the Polytechnic with their dedication, experience and service.

In 2018, RDP signed a Memorandum of Understanding alongside 11 other Alberta post-secondary institutions, pledging support for CAF Reservists who are employees or students. Under this agreement, leave can be granted when reservists are called to serve by the Department of National Defence, ensuring their employment and academic progress are protected until they return.

Red Deer Polytechnic is proud to support CAF Reservists and recognizes the value they bring to campus life through leadership, discipline and a commitment to communities.
