Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is proud to announce the launch of its new Career and Technology Studies (CTS) pathway within the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree, offering journeypersons the opportunity to receive up to 33 credits for their prior education and experience.
"RDP is excited to make it easier for journeypersons to transition into teaching careers," says Dr. Robbie Halonen, Dean of the School of Arts and Education. "Through recognizing the post-secondary credentials these skilled professionals have already earned, RDP is removing barriers and creating pathways for them to share their expertise in the classroom. This initiative reflects RDP's commitment to supporting Trades education across the province and ensuring Career and Technology Studies (CTS) programs in K-12 schools are taught by highly qualified educators who bring real-world experience to students."
The newly approved CTS pathway permits eligible journeypersons to count their previous learning toward the core requirements of the four-year Bachelor of Education degree. Since the degree requires 120 credits, using the CTS pathway means individuals may now finish the degree in as little as three years.
"This new pathway highlights the distinctive programming offered by polytechnics," says Lindsay Engel, Vice President, Academic & Student Experience. "Few post-secondary institutions provide both skilled trades training alongside humanities and education programs. This combination creates a unique opportunity at Red Deer Polytechnic for collaboration across diverse industries."
CTS teachers play a vital role in Alberta's education system, helping junior and senior high school students develop essential skills for personal living, future education and career possibilities. They foster technological proficiency and integrate other curricular subjects into CTS studies, preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving workforce.
