Camosun College has reaffirmed its standing as a premier Canadian applied research institution, securing a spot among the top 50 research colleges in 2025. This year, Camosun was ranked #43 overall among more than 200 colleges, and among similar medium-sized colleges Camosun ranked #2 for completed research projects, #5 for research growth and intensity, and #6 for research partnerships with regional businesses and industries.
This award from Research Infosource reaffirms Camosun Innovates - the applied research arm of the college and home to B.C.'s first Technology Access Centre (TAC) - as a Canadian leader in advanced manufacturing design, development, fabrication, innovation, and production. For more than 15 years, Camosun Innovates has supported companies as they address challenging research questions, develop new product designs, and test imaginative ideas, while avoiding direct competition with local businesses and guaranteeing that partners retain all of their intellectual property.
"It is an honour for our staff and students to serve the innovation needs of local and regional industry partners across so many different economic sectors," says Dr. Richard Gale, Director of Camosun Innovates. "We appreciate the national recognition for work with partner companies, entrepreneurs, and non-profits, addressing their applied research needs, improving their manufacturing processes, and meeting their quality and production goals."
Renowned for practical problem-solving, Camosun Innovates has earned a strong reputation for design thinking, interdisciplinary inquiry, productivity improvement, and tech-savvy invention. Their broad mandate includes advanced manufacturing in all sectors, ranging from aquaculture and agriculture to clean tech and high tech to culture and heritage to forestry and marine; because they are technology-inclusive, Camosun Innovates can work with companies to find the best ways to address their manufacturing needs. Recent innovations include the FireSmart ember simulator that demonstrates wildfire risk, custom automation solutions for small-batch hot sauce bottling, and ground-breaking technology that bridges traditional Indigenous art practices with modern engineering solutions to enable a new approach to totem carving using sustainable second-growth cedar.
"Camosun College demonstrated strong performance in both income growth and research intensity, providing a promising base for the future," says Ron Freedman, CEO, Research Infosource Inc.
