Pranav Sharma's practicum at Locher Evers International not only provided him with valuable hands-on experience in supply chain management but also led to a job offer in the same department. Through mentorship and proactive learning, his experience exemplifies how internships foster professional growth and benefit both students and employers.
When Pranav Sharma walked into Locher Evers International for his practicum, he knew he was stepping into something new. A Supply Chain and Logistics (SCL) post-degree diploma student at Langara, he had a solid base from his courses. Still, the real test was putting learning to work in a fast-paced logistics environment.
"I started as a Customer Solutions Specialist in the Manifest Department," Pranav recalls. "I handled all required documentation before vessels arrived to ensure cargo was customs-cleared with no pending paperwork or payments. Later, I transitioned to the Inland Freight department, where I coordinated shipment movements in Canada and to the U.S.
"During my practicum, I earned my CargoWise Certified Operator certification and developed important skills including time management, meeting tight deadlines, and maintaining strong attention to detail."
Pranav's practicum led to more than new skills. "After completing my practicum at Locher Evers, I received a job offer in the same department where I had been trained."
Power of mentorship
"I started as an intern myself about seven years ago. I took the post-degree diploma in Supply Chain and Logistics at Langara College Continuing Studies back then. That experience gave me a real understanding of how the company works and helped me build the skills I needed to grow. Over time, I moved up and now I'm a Key Account Manager."
Beyond just "showing up."
For students considering a practicum through Langara's SCL program, Pranav has one piece of advice: "Make the most of the eight weeks, as it's a short period to learn everything. Be proactive, ask questions, and absorb as much knowledge as possible. Opportunities like these where people are willing to teach and guide you are valuable. Avoid treating it as just showing up' for the day; instead, take every chance to learn and grow."
