The University of New Brunswick and Holland College's Atlantic Police Academy (APA) have partnered to offer students a faster, more practical and holistic route to a criminology degree.
This innovative program enables students to complete a bachelor's degree in criminology and criminal justice in three and a half years, rather than the traditional four.
The pathway combines the APA's police science (cadet) program with UNB's criminology and criminal justice program in the faculty of arts, giving students both hands-on training and a strong academic foundation.
"As a criminology graduate, I'm delighted to see this collaboration between UNB and Holland College's Atlantic Police Academy come together," said Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle, president and vice chancellor of UNB. "This innovative program will allow students to complement their practical training with comprehensive academic learning, preparing them for well-rounded careers in law enforcement and justice."
Graduates will enter the workforce sooner with the skills employers need, including critical thinking, investigative expertise and real-world experience through on-the-job training.
"This is an exciting opportunity for students to earn a unique and practical degree that opens doors to diverse careers in the public safety sector," said Holland College President & CEO, Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald.
"Through this pathway, students will learn first-hand how academic theory takes shape through the scenarios and simulations they complete as cadets at our Atlantic Police Academy. Upon graduation, they will be well-equipped with the skills and training required to work as police officers in Canada, or to pursue other careers in the criminal justice system."
Students begin at UNB's Fredericton campus for a full academic year, plus a fall term, then transition to Holland College for a winter and summer term at the college's Atlantic Police Academy in Prince Edward Island, then return to UNB for one last full academic year plus a final semester.
Together, UNB and The APA are redefining criminology education in Atlantic Canada and providing a streamlined, comprehensive pathway to careers that strengthen public safety and justice.
