JOHN ABBOTT COLLEGE
Giving back to John Abbott College: A Community Volunteer Program

February 6, 2026

At John Abbott College, excellent education for our students in a stimulating learning environment is at the core of our mission. Our goal is to enhance students' development and potential for success in society. With this, we find ourselves turning to our community for support and become role models for our students.

The College's Academic Success Centre (ASC) strives every day to help students become successful and independent learners through a variety of services such as tutoring, workshops, exam preparation, and more. A key element to the ASC's goal in student success is the Community Volunteer Tutoring program.

The Community Volunteer program connects students with volunteer tutors from outside the College who offer academic support in a wide range of subjects. Whether you're a retired professional, a lifelong learner, or simply someone who wants to give back, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact.

To me, being a volunteer is about supporting my community the same way that my community has supported me. I would not be who I am today without the help of the people around me, so it only makes sense to help to others whenever I can.

- Maia Sinkins, Community Volunteer, Master of Science student

Becoming a Community Volunteer Tutor is more than teaching, it is about helping the next generation of professionals succeed.

[My tutor] never made me feel embarrassed by asking questions. He explained things so that things became meaningful. I used to feel stressed about this topic, but now I feel much more comfortable because of him. Thank you very much for his help. I will recommend his service to anyone!

- Jennie H., Social Science student, John Abbott College

Community Volunteer Tutors are asked to spend a few hours a week throughout the semester, either in person at the College or online, tutoring engaged and motivated students. The schedule is solely based on the tutors' availability. The tutors set their own schedule, and the ASC will coordinate the day and time with the students.

I really enjoy the people I work with here, meaning in the Centre. I admire what they do here with this Community Volunteer Program. It's partly about giving back but also, I think the program here in general, what they do at the Academic Success Centre, is really well thought out, and I really enjoy coming and I look forward to the semester starting every year.

-John Hanson, Community Volunteer, Retired Art History Teacher and Artist
