Keyano College Launches Relative-in-Residence Program in Partnership with Ihkapaskwa Collective

February 10, 2026

Keyano College is proud to announce the launch of the Relative-in-Residence program in partnership with the Ihkapaskwa Collective, made possible by funding provided by the Suncor Energy Foundation. The program strengthens on-campus supports for Indigenous students by fostering cultural understanding and community connections, with a goal of creating opportunities for learning, connecting and growing together.

Sheena Bradley, executive director of the Ihkapaskwa Collective said "The Relative-in-Residence program reflects Indigenous ways of learning through relationship and care. This partnership is grounded in a team-based kinship model supported by a broader circle of Elders, Aunties, Uncles, and Knowledge Keepers who offer gentle guidance and culturally grounded support. Together, we are creating a space where students feel held, respected, and connected throughout their academic journeys."

The Ihkapaskwa Collective is an Indigenous-led nonprofit organization dedicated to Indigenous health and wellness, rooted in the values of equity, advocacy, and cultural resurgence. Through partnerships and community-driven initiatives, the Ihkapaskwa Collective works to create spaces that honour Indigenous knowledge, relationships, and lived experience.

The Relative-in-Residence program is available to all Indigenous students at Keyano College and offers an additional, culturally grounded resource focused on relationship -building, wellness, and community connection. Through one-on-one conversations and shared learning opportunities, the program supports students as they navigate their academic journeys while staying connected to their culture and community.

"This partnership with the Ihkapaskwa Collective is rooted in respect, relationship, and community," said Chantal Beaver, associate vice-president of Public Engagement at Keyano College. "The Relative-in-Residence program strengthens the circle of support around Indigenous students by honouring lived experience, cultural knowledge, and connection as essential parts of student success."

Students can book one-on-one appointments with the Relative-in-Residence as needed to receive guidance and support. Appointments can be requested by scanning a QR code available on campus or by emailing the Indigenous Student Coordinator directly.

When on campus, the Relative-in-Residence will be based in the Elder Office, sponsored by Pembina, located beside the Bouchier Indigenous Student Centre. Pembina's support helps ensure a welcoming, dedicated environment for Indigenous student services.

For more information about the Relative-in-Residence program, students are encouraged to visit campus signage or email the Indigenous Student Coordinator.
