SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC
Dental Aide program offers peek into dental profession

March 4, 2026

When Morgan Balogh graduated high school, she wasn't sure if a career in dentistry was the right fit. Committing to a full year in the Dental Assisting program felt intimidating but dental care always interested her. "Ever since I was little, I was so excited to go to the dentist. Everyone thought it was so weird!" she says.

Her guidance counselor suggested Saskatchewan Polytechnic's new Dental Aide applied certificate program. It offered Balogh the opportunity to explore the dentistry field without having to commit to long-term studies or uproot her life.

The Dental Aide program is designed as an introduction into the dental field. Delivered primarily online with a two-week hands-on practicum in Regina, the program runs for 16 weeks each winter. Students learn essential skills for safe and competent practice, from sterilization techniques to dental charting and insurance billing. Four of the eight courses transfer directly into the Dental Assisting certificate program, reducing stress and workload for those who continue their education.

"The program allows for flexible learning and the ability to work while completing it," says Amanda Walters, program head. "Dental aides are in demand in the province and this program provides a great foundation."

For Balough, the flexibility was a big plus. "I really liked the online learning, but you have to hold yourself accountable to get things done," she says.

The practicum was a highlight, giving her the chance to apply what she had learned. "We did lectures, then moved into the clinics and did performance tests. It was pretty cool," adds Balogh.

The experience confirmed her career choice. "Being in the clinic and starting the hands-on stuff, I knew this was where I wanted to take my career," says Balogh. "It gave me the confidence to make the leap to the Dental Assisting program."

Balogh encourages anyone curious about dental careers to consider the program. "I would definitely recommend dental aide for people who aren't sure about going into dentistry," she says. "It's a stepping stool. It's only a couple of months and you can see if it's right for you."

As for her future, Balogh hopes to specialize. "After I graduate, I want to move into orthodontics," she says.

For those looking to start a career in the dental profession, the Dental Aide program offers a practical, flexible way to begin and can open doors to exciting opportunities.
