NORTHERN LAKES COLLEGE
Northern Lakes College Gifts Native Cultural Arts Museum to Kapawe'no First Nation

April 15, 2026

The Board of Governors of Northern Lakes College is pleased to gift the Native Cultural Arts Museum to Kapawe'no First Nation, a significant step in reconciliation and cultural recognition. This transfer builds upon the College's earlier disposition of its Grouard Campus assets to the Nation, approved through a Ministerial Order under Alberta's Real Property Governance Act and Post-secondary Learning Act.

Lifetime Councillor Debbie Chalifoux, Hereditary Chief Sydney L. Halcrow, Barry Sharkawi, Chair, Board of Governors, Dr. Glenn Mitchell, President & CEO

The Native Cultural Arts Museum, long a cornerstone for preserving and showcasing Indigenous heritage in northern Alberta, will now be under the stewardship of Kapawe'no First Nation. This move ensures the museum's rich collection and educational programming remain rooted in Indigenous traditions, guided by those who hold the stories, language, and artistry of the land.

"This is more than a transfer of property; it is a commitment to reconciliation and cultural continuity. By entrusting the museum to Kapawe'no First Nation, we honour their role as knowledge keepers and strengthen our shared vision for education and cultural preservation."

Barry Sharkawi, Chair, Board of Governors

"Kapawe'no First Nation has worked tirelessly to create spaces where our children and communities can learn and thrive. The museum will be a living classroom - a place where history, art, and language come together for future generations."

Hereditary Chief Sydney Halcrow, Kapawe'no First Nation

"Gifting the museum to Kapawe'no First Nation ensures that its cultural heritage is preserved and guided by those who carry its ancestral knowledge."

Dr. Glenn Mitchell, President & CEO

Northern Lakes College will maintain its education presence in the Hamlet of Grouard and surrounding communities, continuing to provide programs and services.
