Central Alberta First (CAF), in collaboration with Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) and the Regional Business Support Network (RBSN), is launching a new AI Workshop Series designed to help small and medium-sized businesses across the region build practical skills and confidence in using artificial intelligence.
The initiative builds on the success of the Central Alberta AI Conference held in October 2025, which brought together businesses from across the region and generated 167 participant evaluations. Feedback from that event, along with insights from the BREWD regional business survey involving more than 700 businesses, identified a clear need for accessible, hands-on AI training.
"Businesses told us they don't need more hype around AI they need practical guidance on how to use it in their day-to-day operations," said Michelle McFadden, Small Business Development Advisor with the Regional Business Support Network. "This workshop series is a direct response to that feedback."
"This initiative is a strong example of what regional collaboration can achieve," said Sandra Blyth, Economic Development Manager Invest Olds and Chairperson, Central Alberta First. "By working together with Red Deer Polytechnic and our regional partners, we are ensuring that businesses across Central Alberta have access to the tools, knowledge, and support they need to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving economy."
The first session in the series, "AI for Small Business: What It Is, What It Isn't, and How to Use It Today," is a half-day, live online workshop designed for business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, and employees. The session focuses on real-world applications of AI in areas such as communication, research, workflow efficiency, and decision-making without requiring any technical background.
Participants will gain:
- A clear understanding of what AI can and cannot do in a business context
- Practical tools and approaches that can be applied immediately
- Confidence to evaluate and use AI tools responsibly
The workshop is the first in a five-part learning pathway, developed by experts in Red Deer Polytechnic's Continuing Education and Corporate Training division, with each session building toward more advanced operational and strategic applications of AI in business.
"This collaboration reflects a strong regional commitment to supporting business innovation and competitiveness," said Lisa Henderson, Interim Dean, Donald School of Business at Red Deer Polytechnic. "By combining applied expertise with real business needs, we are helping organizations adopt AI in a way that is practical, responsible and impactful."
The program is delivered entirely online to ensure accessibility for businesses across central Alberta, removing geographic barriers and allowing participants to engage without leaving their operations.
Two upcoming sessions are available, with businesses able to choose a date that fits their schedule:
- May session
- June session
The AI Workshop Series is part of broader regional efforts through the Central Alberta First BREWD initiative to strengthen business resilience, improve productivity, and support adoption of emerging technologies across central Alberta.
