GEORGIAN COLLEGE
Georgian marks milestone as first Honours Bachelor of Science - Nursing graduates receive nursing pins

May 6, 2026

Georgian College is celebrating an important milestone as students from the first graduating classes of its Honours Bachelor of Science - Nursing (BScN) program take part in nursing pinning ceremonies in Owen Sound and Barrie. These ceremonies mark the first graduating cohorts since the program launched at both campuses in fall 2022.

In addition to Georgian's Honours BScN graduates, Barrie will also host a ceremony recognizing graduates from the RPN to BScN pathway.  The bridging pathway provides registered practical nurses (RPNs) with an accelerated route to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, building on previous education and professional experience while expanding career opportunities within the nursing profession.

For generations, pinning ceremonies have held deep meaning in nursing, symbolizing the transition from student to nurse. Inspired by the legacy of Florence Nightingale, the nursing pin has long represented compassion, professionalism and a commitment to patient care. Across Ontario and beyond, this tradition remains a powerful rite of passage for nurses entering the profession.

At Georgian, this year's ceremonies carry added significance with the introduction of the college's newly designed nursing pin, which will become a lasting symbol for future graduates of Georgian's nursing programs.

"This is an incredible moment for our students, faculty and college community," said Sara Lankshear, Associate Dean, Nursing at Georgian College. "Our first graduating classes have helped shape this program in meaningful ways, and these ceremonies recognize both their achievements and the vital role they are about to play in strengthening health care in our region and beyond."

Many graduates are expected to continue serving their local communities, moving into careers with hospitals, long-term care providers, home-care organizations and other health-care agencies where many have already built strong connections through placements.

Barrie Honours BScN ceremony:
Date: Wednesday, May 6
Time: 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Location: Georgian College Barrie Campus, Georgian Theatre, C building

The ceremony will feature opening remarks, reflections on the history of the nursing pin, graduate pin presentations, the collective nursing pledge, a valedictorian address and a celebration recognizing this major professional milestone.
