The Barrett STEAM Academy Showcase celebrated student innovation through capstone projects in coding, robotics, automation, and design.
The Barrett STEAM Academy hosted its Winter Cohort Showcase on April 11, celebrating the achievements of students following 12 weeks of learning. Throughout the program, students developed new skills in coding, robotics, automation, 3D modelling, and more, culminating in the creation of capstone projects that applied these skills to real-world challenges.
Approximately 100 students showcased and presented their capstone projects to Humber staff, friends, and family. Working in groups, students were tasked with designing solutions to problems they encounter in their everyday lives. Projects ranged from a memory game designed to support individuals living with Alzheimer's, to an assistive glove for people with cerebral palsy and a focus pad aimed at helping students who struggle with distractions in the classroom. Following the project presentations, students were invited to participate in a graduation ceremony.
The graduation ceremony was attended by members of the Barrett Family Foundation, Humber President & CEO Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, Humber Senior-Vice President, Academic Dr. Gina Antonacci, and Paul Griffin, Senior Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology. As their names were called, students took to the stage to receive their certificates of participation, along with prizes presented by the Barrett Family Foundation.
A special highlight of the event was a surprise visit from Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow. Mayor Chow toured the showcase, viewed the students' projects, and shared a few words with the students and their families, commending their creativity, innovation, and dedication. Her visit emphasized the impact of the Barrett STEAM Academy and showcased Humber's commitment to inspiring the next generation of innovators.
