SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC
Leon Friesen awarded honorary degree from Sask Polytech

June 5, 2026

For more than two decades, Saskatchewan Polytechnic has recognized exceptional individuals whose achievements and service have made a lasting impact across the province. At its Regina campus convocation, Sask Polytech awarded Leon Friesen an honorary degree in applied studies.

Friesen co-founded Westridge Construction with three partners in Regina in 1989. A journeyperson carpenter, he built his career through hands-on roles as a carpenter, foreman, superintendent, estimator and project manager. He led the company for more than 30 years, guided by a commitment to integrity, quality and community. Under his leadership, Westridge grew into one of Saskatchewan's most respected construction firms.

Although now retired, Friesen continues to serve as a director on the company's board, supporting the leadership team he helped develop.

"Leon's dedication and leadership reflect a deep commitment to the construction industry and to building strong communities," says Dr. Larry Rosia, president and CEO of Sask Polytech. "As a journeyperson carpenter and Sask Polytech alum, he demonstrates the value of applied education, mentorship and giving back. His significant and life-long contributions have strengthened communities and created opportunity across Saskatchewan."

Westridge Construction has a strong record of community investment. The company's philanthropic efforts have been recognized by the Regina Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Construction Association and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Friesen has also played a leadership role across the construction industry, serving on numerous provincial and national boards, including terms as president on several. He is particularly proud of his 12 years on the Carpentry Apprenticeship Board and National Carpentry Curriculum and Examination Board, where he contributed to the development of a new National Red Seal Carpentry Exam.

In recognition of his dedication to the construction industry, Friesen has received honorary life memberships from both the Saskatchewan Construction Association and the Regina Construction Association, as well as a recent Mentor Award from Economic Development Regina.
