It was a week of celebration, achievement, and inspiration as Cambrian College held its annual convocation ceremonies at its main campus in Greater Sudbury.
Cambrian College held its annual convocation ceremonies this week at its Barry Downe campus. Approximately 2,300 students received their credential at this year's convocation.
Approximately 2300 graduates received their credentials, including certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, degrees, and graduate certificates.
In her address to graduates, President Kristine Morrissey encouraged students to stay connected to their faculty, classmates, and the friends they've made during their time at Cambrian. Morrissey also invited graduates to have courage and curiosity throughout their lives.
"Your careers may not follow a straight line," shared Morrissey. "You may change directions. You may take risks, experience setbacks, and discover passions you haven't yet imagined. Have the courage to embrace it all! Growth often comes through the detours. Be curious. Keep learning. Trust yourself enough to try things before you feel completely ready. Say yes to opportunities that challenge you.
Pursue work that gives you purpose and meaning. And when life becomes noisy and it will trust your inner compass."
Convocation ceremonies also recognized exceptional academic achievement and leadership among Cambrian students.
The Governor General's Academic Silver Medal honours the student graduating from a degree program with the highest overall average. This year's recipient was Nicholas Perkovic of Sudbury, who graduated from the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration program (Accounting Specialization) with an average of 92 per cent.
The Governor General's Academic Bronze Medal for highest average for a student graduating from a diploma program was presented to Yuk Bing Yeung. Originally from Hong Kong, but now living in Markham, Ontario, Yuk Bing Yeung completed the Dental Hygiene program with an average of 97 per cent.
The President's Gold Award was presented to Sudbury's Caroline Silman, a graduate of the Practical Nursing program. This award recognizes a student with a grade point average of at least 3.5 who has contributed to both campus and community life.
The President's Silver Award was presented to Tahmoor Shiekh, a graduate of the Paramedic program who was raised in India but is now living in Sudbury. This award is given annually to a student with a grade point average of at least 3.0 who has contributed to both campus and community life.
Student leaders were also honoured at this year's convocation. Rushi Tilva was recognized for leading Cambrian Student Council this past year. Chatham's Rushawn Bascoe was celebrated for his leadership of the Cambrian Athletic Association.
Cambrian College also recognized distinguished alumni and community leaders during convocation ceremonies.
The Dr. Fred Sheridan Award for outstanding contributions to the community through education was presented to Sonia Del Missier. Del Missier's career at Cambrian spanned 39 years, where she served in many capacities, including Vice-President Academic and interim President. Del Missier remains an active supporter of Cambrian's programs and students.
Cambrian College also conferred an honorary Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration on Julie Zulich, CEO of TESC. Zulich was recognized for her outstanding achievements and contributions in the fields of business, leadership and community impact.
"Julie Zulich and Sonia Del Missier exemplify the kind of leadership, service, and community impact that reflect Cambrian College's values," adds President Morrissey. "Their contributions have strengthened Northern Ontario in meaningful ways, and we are proud to recognize their achievements during this year's convocation celebrations."
