Molecular biologist Shawn Shortill is the recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award from Camosun College, in recognition of his leadership and contributions to the scientific community.

"Camosun was such a special part of my academic and personal growth journey," says Shawn. "I met people who became lifelong friends, and I was mentored by some of the most patient, encouraging, supportive professionals I have ever encountered. My time at Camosun put me on a path towards biology, academia and industry. It means more than I can say to be acknowledged in this way."

Currently Director of Product Management at MindWalk Biologics, Shawn leads a team of immunologists and business professionals in developing life-saving antibody therapeutics and critical research reagents for hospitals and universities. He started his career at Camosun with an Associate of Science Degree in Biology before completing his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Microbiology at the University of Victoria. Shawn spent the next years investigating the molecular mechanisms of juvenile neurological disease at the BC Children's Hospital Research Centre, earning a PhD in Medical Genetics from The University of British Columbia for this work. His subsequent postdoctoral research at the BC Cancer Research Centre helped establish a precision medicine start-up company called Arrowsmith Genetics, Inc.

While his trajectory is ambitious and accomplished, Shawn describes it as an "atypical path" to get to where he is now. After graduating from high school without a strong direction, Shawn started with Camosun's upgrading courses.

"The college gave my shaky feet a firm foundation that I could use to leap from and the confidence to continue exploring new opportunities," he reflects. "I came to Camosun not knowing what was out there for me. I sampled a few different courses until landing on biology. The instructors and the college employees helped me feel welcome and set me on this path. I felt fully prepared for the bachelor's program at UVic and beyond to graduate school at UBC."

In addition to his academic achievements and career accomplishments, Shawn gives back to the scientific community in BC by acting as an advocate and communicator. He also periodically returns to Camosun as a guest lecturer in science courses.

"Congratulations, Shawn, on your recognition as this year's Distinguished Alumni. We're incredibly proud of all you've achieved and appreciate your continued connection to our community," says Dr. Lane Trotter, president of Camosun College.

Shawn has words of wisdom and advice for new grads and current students. "With a Camosun education, you can reach heights that may have felt unattainable when you started your program. Stay in contact with your instructors and your peers. Some of my Camosun colleagues have become lifelong friends, coworkers and partners in business. Look for ways to stay engaged with the college and update your instructors on what you're up to."

The annual alumni awards highlight the outstanding achievements of individuals who exemplify Camosun's commitment to excellence and service, and who continue to make significant contributions in their fields. Camosun's Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes outstanding alumni who graduated more than 10 years ago.
