Conestoga students and alumni are turning their skills into businesses while supporting organizations across Waterloo Region through the Conestoga Entrepreneurship Collective's Gig Lab and Gig Marketplace.
The Gig Marketplace recently surpassed $1 million in services delivered since launching in October 2021. The platform now features more than 120 freelancers offering expertise across over 100 areas, including marketing, design, web development, bookkeeping, software development and prototyping.
"This milestone isn't just about hitting a number. It shows that students can turn their skills into real income while delivering the services companies need," said Rose Mastnak, director of the Conestoga Entrepreneurship Collective.
Freelancers featured on the marketplace have completed the 15-week Gig Lab, Canada's only incubator dedicated to helping student and alumni freelancers launch their own businesses. Participants receive training in pricing, client management, project delivery and professional standards before becoming eligible to join the marketplace.
The platform acts as an online storefront and lead generator, connecting business-ready freelancers with organizations looking for local talent. It also provides Gig Lab graduates with opportunities to earn income, build their portfolios and remain connected to Conestoga's entrepreneurial community.
Partnerships with organizations including the Accelerator Centre, Catalyst Commons and local chambers of commerce have connected Gig Marketplace freelancers with businesses across the region. Through more than 150 projects, students and alumni have delivered services ranging from branding and web development to product design and manufacturing, demonstrating the role freelance entrepreneurship can play in building sustainable careers and supporting the community.
Organizations looking for freelance support can explore available talent at conestogagigs.ca.
The Conestoga Entrepreneurship Collective supports students and alumni through multiple pathways that equip them to pursue their entrepreneurial potential. Through its programs, members of the Conestoga community can start a business, launch a freelance career or develop the skills to join a high-growth company.
