Darnel Doreus was thrilled to learn he would be attending Humber Polytechnic this fall for the Architectural Technology program.
Doreus chose Humber for a variety of reasons, including Humber's commitment to supporting student's personal and academic growth.
"I chose Humber because I felt like it would be a good place for me to grow both academically and personally," said Doreus. "I'm most looking forward to exceeding my own expectations [and] meeting new people."
Making his start at Humber even sweeter was the fact that Doreus was named the winner of the 2026 Tuition Contest and received $5,000 to put towards his tuition.
"I was wrapping up at work when I got the email," said Doreus. "So, it really caught me by surprise...and I didn't fully process that I won until I was on my way back home."
The annual contest is open to domestic students enrolling at Humber for the first time who have been accepted to a program and confirmed their offer of admission.
Doreus said the contest winnings will take pressure off funding his education.
"The $5,000 will make a big difference financially and give me one less thing to worry about as I begin my studies. It will allow me to focus more on my education and getting the most out of my Humber experience".
After he graduates and Doreus wants to build a career as an architect, using what he learns at Humber to support his goals.
When asked who will be cheering him on from the sidelines as he begins this next chapter, Doreus credits family and friends.
"My mom has been a huge source of support and encouragement for me, along with my older cousins, who I look up to like older siblings. My friends have also supported me and having people around me who push me to be better has motivated me a lot."
