Each scholarship is designed to support students entering skilled trades, with $40,000 awarded to students enrolled in trades programs of two years, and $20,000 awarded to students in one-year certificate programs. The scholarships cover tuition, tools, and living expenses.
Five students received two-year scholarships including Jesse Spencer (Power Engineering Technology) of Campbellford in eastern Ontario, Paige West (Electrical Engineering) of Rosseau in the Muskoka region, Kayla Simm (Welding and Fabrication) of Trenton in eastern Ontario, Zachary Rice (Electrical Engineering) of Greater Sudbury, and Cameron Doucet (Heavy Equipment) of Val Caron in Greater Sudbury.
"Receiving the Schulich Builders Scholarship has helped tremendously, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies here at Cambrian rather than worrying about finances," explains Jesse Spenser. "In my career, my goal is to become a First-Class Power Engineer, advance through the industry ranks, and potentially work in the nuclear energy field."
"Receiving this scholarship means I was given the ability to empower the next generation of tradespeople," says Kayla Simm. "The trades are full of unique and rewarding opportunities that everyone should be able to enjoy. I want to inspire the next generations especially the girls to push against the normal and work in a field they are genuinely passionate about."
Four Carpentry program students were recipients of one-year scholarships, including Danila Roy of Greater Sudbury, Laydon Bursey of Whitefish in Greater Sudbury, Lauren Comeau of Val Caron in Greater Sudbury and Kayla Doyle of Kapuskasing, west of Timmins.
"I have always liked working with my hands and creating something new, which is what got me interested in trades," adds Kayla Doyle of Kapuskasing. "This scholarship means a lot as it showed me that others believe in my capabilities, which will only make me work harder to achieve my goals in the near future. I am proud of myself for getting over my fears and following my heart to come to Cambrian College, and I am so happy to have this scholarship to help."
The Schulich Foundation created the program to address Canada's skilled labour shortage and to highlight the essential role of trades in building and maintaining vital infrastructure. In addition to scholarships, the Foundation contributes annually to college resources to help advance the careers of recipients.
"We are honoured once again to be part of the Schulich Builders program," says Kim Crane, Cambrian's Dean of Skilled Trades, Engineering Technology, and Environmental Studies. "These scholarships represent a life-changing investment in our students and in the future of our region. For Northern Ontario, this support helps ensure we are preparing the skilled trades workforce our economy and communities need to thrive."
