Graduates of Lambton College's Instrumentation & Control Engineering Technology (ICET) program now have a pathway to pursue apprenticeship after graduation.
Lambton College was recently approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) to offer a unique diploma-to-apprenticeship pathway that would exempt ICET students from the in-school component of the Instrumentation Control Technician (447A) apprenticeship.
"At this time, Lambton College is the only program in Ontario to be approved for this pathway," says Kevin Ryan, a Professor in the ICET program. "I think it speaks to the quality of our program documentation and the training our students receive."
The new pathway opportunity will allow graduates of the College's three year ICET Co-op program to forgo the in-school portion of their apprenticeship training.
"What this tells us is that our ICET program equals or exceeds the in-school training portion of the apprenticeship program," explains Ryan.
The new agreement means that industry employers can now hire graduates straight out of college, which provides a significant cost-savings as they would typically have to pay for the cost of apprentices to attend trade school.
Graduates can now work directly towards achieving the 8000 hours of practical field time needed to write their exam for their Certificate of Qualification and complete their apprenticeship.
Ryan says the quality of Lambton College's ICET program combined with some of the unique features of the coursework is what led to the approval for this pathway.
He adds that the initiative directly supports Lambton College's Centre of Excellence in Energy & Bio-Industrial Technologies and falls in line with the College's long-term commitment to establishing distinctive programs, educational pathways, and applied research initiatives that will benefit both students and the community.
