Parks Canada and New Brunswick Community College team up to build 3rd Rustic Cabin in Fundy National Park

May 10, 2018

Visitors to Fundy National Park can enjoy a new rustic cabin this summer as a result of a partnership between Parks Canada and the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC). Students of NBCC Moncton's Building and Construction program used their new skills and quality workmanship to build the national park's third cabin which is being installed along Black Horse Trail. Two rustic cabins, previously built by NBCC students, are located at Hastings Road and Maple Grove trail.

As part of a practical job experience and their program curriculum, students worked as a team to build the new cabin from scratch. The cabin project helps NBCC maximize its goal of providing hands-on, real-world training for students, and also helps foster a sense of pride and connection to New Brunswick's natural heritage. The NBCC students will also be involved in the on-site assembly of the cabin.

The rustic cabins are located in backcountry areas of Fundy National Park, away from the central facilities. The more remote locations help guests to unwind, connect with nature, and offer breathtaking views of the Bay of Fundy. The Black Horse trail is a 4.4 km loop and a combined hiking/ biking trail so visitors now have the option of an overnight stop location and to thoroughly explore the trail's surroundings and its cultural significance. The trail is located in the newly redeveloped Chignecto Recreation Area - which includes a pump track and a network of multi-use trails.

The Government of Canada is celebrating families with free admission to all Parks Canada's places for youth 17 and under in 2018 and beyond. Parks Canada invites Canadian families and their children to experience the outdoors and learn more about our environment and heritage.
