Correctional Service of Canada recruits to be trained at Holland College in Slemon Park

March 6, 2019

Holland College's Atlantic Police Academy and the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) have entered into an 18-month contract to deliver CSC's Correctional Training Program at Holland College in Slemon Park. To support the agreement, the Slemon Park Corporation (SPC) will undertake major renovations to building 48 to establish a National Satellite Training Academy.

Approximately 300 recruits will be trained from June 2019 to August 2020. SPC will invest in new infrastructure to complete the necessary renovations and upgrades in support of Holland College. The provincial government will provide SPC with $995,000 in repayable financing to facilitate the upgrades.

"This is great news not only for Slemon Park, but for Summerside and the region as a whole," Economic Development and Tourism Minister Chris Palmer said. "Having this many recruits residing here over the life of the contract will bring a boost to local businesses and service providers and will allow Slemon Park to add modern upgrades to one of its facilities."

SPC has been working with Holland College's Atlantic Police Academy for many years facilitating access to indoor and outdoor firing ranges, classrooms, gymnasiums as well as indoor scenario-based training space.

"The Atlantic Police Academy is a leader in public safety training in Canada," said Dr. Sandy MacDonald, President of Holland College. "Our strong partnerships with the Government of Prince Edward Island and Slemon Park Corporation help us bring training opportunities like this to fruition. The renovations not only enable us to provide training facilities for the Correctional Service of Canada Correctional Training Program, the facility will also benefit our own students in the Atlantic Police Academy Correctional Officer program well into the future."

SPC has a strong history and reputation for providing similar training facilities in Slemon Park. Slemon Park and Holland College's Atlantic Police Academy have a unique range of training facilities that have been regularly used by a variety of organizations including the RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Parks Canada and the Department of National Defense
