The Tzu Chi Clinic of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is celebrating a year's success at Humber's North Campus. It is the first-ever comprehensive TCM clinic in a public postsecondary institution in Canada.
The celebration included the unveiling of a Tzu Chi Clinic donor wall recognizing support for the Clinic. The event welcomed members of the Tzu Chi Foundation Canada and their donors; Catherine Hsu, director general of the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office (TECO) in Toronto; Michael Sun, director of the Cultural Centre of TECO Toronto; and Godwin Chan, councillor of Richmond Hill Ward 6, chair of the Economic Development Committee and director of Federation of Canadian Municipalities to celebrate the occasion alongside Humber staff, faculty and students.
"On behalf of the Tzu Chi Foundation Canada, we are very grateful to have this opportunity to promote the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We believe establishing this Clinic is of great significance, and through cooperation with Humber College, more people will be exposed to health and recognize the medical benefit of Traditional Chinese Medicine," says Dr. Michael Chung, vice CEO of Tzu Chi Foundation Canada and managing director of the Tzu Chi Clinic of Traditional Chinese Medicine. "This Clinic is a unique place with the power for healing. We want to not only treat people's suffering, but their hearts as well."
The Clinic supports experiential learning through clinical placement opportunities for students in Humber's Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioner advanced diploma program. Through hands-on learning and donor support for scholarships, students can take their learning to the next level. Students receive complete supervised direct patient care hours, are able to determine diagnoses and treatment plans, and gain valuable experience that is integral to Humber's polytechnic approach to education.
"Having the Clinic as an integral part of our academic programming at Humber is what our institution is all about," says Alister Mathieson, vice president, Advancement and External Affairs. "Collectively, we would not have the Clinic here today without the support of the Tzu Chi Foundation and individual donors. This is a huge learning opportunity provided to our students who are part of the TCM Practitioner program."
