Vanier College is very proud to announce that with a 100% pass rate, all 34 of the 2019 Vanier Nursing graduating students who wrote the licensing exam, surpassed the provincial success rate of 91% on the very demanding and compulsory Professional Licensing Exam of the OIIQ - Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec.
Over the past several years, college development and support opportunities have allowed the Nursing Department to develop and implement many projects focused on promoting student success on written exams. These projects include the Nursing Adjunct Model, the Malawi Nursing Exchange, VPASS (Vanier Performance Assessment Strategies for Success), and the OIIQ Student Success Project. The Nursing program offers these resources to all nursing students as part of the program. In addition, the implementation of simulation using high fidelity mannequins has helped students transfer their knowledge by applying it to real-life scenarios in the simulation laboratories.
"The next few years will be exciting ones for Vanier Nursing, as we continue to develop existing projects and look forward to new ones, such as the development of an onsite Nursing Clinic," says Antoinette Cocciolo, Coordinator of the Nursing Program.
According to Nathalie Séguin, Vanier Nursing teacher and Clinic Project Manager, this walk-in clinic would focus on health and wellness and provide basic health care needs to the Vanier, St. Laurent and, eventually, adjoining communities. Under the supervision of their teachers, Vanier nursing students would provide services such as blood pressure monitoring, vaccinations and dressing changes.
"Without question, Vanier produces excellent nurses. Our graduates go on to work in all areas of nursing, including high acute areas, such as emergency rooms and intensive care units throughout the MUHC, Montreal area hospitals and abroad," says Antoinette Cocciolo.
She goes on to say, "Upon graduation, students can continue their studies through the Integrated Nursing Program at McGill University and obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Many graduates also pursue their Master's of Science in Nursing and Nurse Practitioner degrees. However, the true testament to our program is that many of our graduates return to Vanier, where it all began for them, to teach the future generation of competent and caring nurses. This is the commitment we make in our vision statement: Vanier Nursing: Facilitating the development of our Nursing students to become competent and caring professionals."
