Vanier College is pleased to announce the creation of the new Creativity and Innovation College-wide Major - a major all students can participate in, no matter what their program of study. The new major is a way for students to get involved and excited about the future.
A College-wide Major is a combination of at least four courses from three or more disciplines linked by a common theme and taken by students over several semesters. In addition to specific courses, students also participate in special activities and benefit from guest lectures. This concentration of courses and activities in a particular subject gives students an expertise. At the end of their studies, students who have completed a college major receive a Majors certificate in addition to a Diploma of College Studies in their selected program.
What is the essence of the new Creativity and innovation Major at Vanier?
- The Creativity and Innovation Major allows students to get Vanier credit for projects they are passionate about as well as uncover and develop their hidden talents.
- With the Innovation and Creativity Major, students will get the chance to develop the skills and knowledge to become leaders in the 21st century economy by working on projects of their choice in any field they want, art, technology, not-for-profit, research, business and sports.
- Even more, they can show off the projects they have worked on to universities and in job interviews to impress future employers and admission officers.
- Students can apply to a College-wide Major during their first or second semester at Vanier.
"Humans learn a lot when they work on their passions. The Creativity and Innovation Major gives Vanier students college credit for working on projects they care about deeply, be it making videos for You Tube, playing hockey, rapping, knitting, playing board games, cooking or anything else," says Vanier teacher Avery Rueb who spearheaded the creation of this new college major.
"There is a demonstrated link between the level of engagement of students in a project and the depth of their learning. The Creativity and Innovation Major has that positive impact on learning now, while also equipping students for the future with the experience of having completed complex projects, and with concrete realizations to boast," says Isabelle Delisle, Dean of the Faculty of General Education.
