BCIT introduces microcredentials with the launch of three programs

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is launching its first ever microcredential programs to provide learners with an industry-focused, applied education that allows them to rapidly upskill or reskill, build resiliency, and stay ahead of workplace trends. Microcredentials are flexible, short-term programs that help learners quickly master new competencies and gain knowledge essential to in-demand Canadian industries.

In this initial release of microcredential programs at BCIT, three courses have been developed in collaboration with industry.

• Essentials of Natural Resource and Environmental Protection - This microcredential was jointly developed with Vancouver Island University (VIU) to support learners in understanding the importance of natural resources to British Columbia and potential career pathways in the field. Learners will also gain familiarity with field techniques, tools, maps and data being used, and understand how climate change intersects with BC's natural resources.
• Digital Transformation - Technology is transforming how people live and work. Learners gain new digital competencies and insights into the concepts of Digital Privacy and Security, Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Mixed Reality, and Blockchain - including how these could benefit or threaten businesses.
• Introductory Studies in Mass Timber Construction - From building envelope and services installation to construction management and 3D modeling, learners will gain expertise in mass timber construction.

Microcredentials are key educational tools in supporting relevant, flexible, and lifelong learning opportunities for students, while building an agile workforce," says Dr. Tom Roemer, Vice President, Academic, BCIT.

The value, flexibility, and relevance of microcredentials

Microcredentials are a valuable option for learners to quickly strengthen resumés and advance careers. Students may also choose to add on digital badges or credentials from BCIT to further enhance their educational journey. Microcredentials can also be stacked to ladder into a course, certificate, or diploma program, making them a focused and affordable option in pursuing flexible and relevant education.
