FLEMING COLLEGE
Fleming College commits to being a welcoming place for all by establishing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Council

March 24, 2021

Fleming College prides itself on being a welcoming place for all. To reinforce and further this commitment at all levels, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Council has been established to provide advice and recommendations to Fleming's Senior Management Team on policy, governance and operational matters.

EDI's mandate includes leading initiatives that promote equity and inclusiveness by:

  • Creating a culture and opportunities to discuss and act on issues related to equity, inclusion, systemic oppression and discrimination of any form
  • Supporting employees in the development of their skills, so they are able to identify and work to dismantle all forms of oppression and eliminate barriers to inclusion
  • Encouraging greater diversity within our faculty and staff through identifying and addressing barriers to inclusion and forms of discrimination

"Fleming is committed to being a welcoming place for all, where the needs of our diverse populations are met, and varying perspectives enrich our communities," said Maureen Adamson, Fleming President. "Together, guided by our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Council, Fleming will continue to follow our strategic direction and meet our commitment to eliminate barriers and build an inclusive sense of belonging."

The EDI Council will be responsible for advising on and undertaking projects focused on: organizational policies, practices and advocacy that impact representation of faculty, staff and students; the provision of professional learning material and workshops; and recruitment, retention and advancement within all areas of the College.

The EDI Council is chaired by the Dean of Fleming's School of Justice and Community Development, and has representatives from unions, student associations and various departments. The Council also has representation from women, racialized persons, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities and members of the LGBTQ2+ communities.

The work of the Council will set Fleming apart as a top employer in the region through focus on a shared culture of respect, transparency and accountability.
